History of the Rolls-Royce Group
Rolls-Royce Group Plc origins go back to 1906 when two men, Henry Royce and Charles Royce set up business to manufacture a range of cars. Henry Royce himself an engineer designed his first aero engine in 1914 and the company began to develop and produce aero engines for the war effort.
It is estimated that half the engines used by the Allies in the First World War were made by Rolls Royce. By the 1920's a majority of the Rolls Royce company was dominated by selling aero engines.
Events leading up to 1971 led to Rolls-Royce going into administrative receivership and as a result becoming nationalised. The aircraft engine division was separated from the automotive division and Rolls-Royce Motors was formed in 1973. However, in 1987 Rolls-Royce returned to the private sector after a series of mergers and acquisitions.
Rolls-Royce Group Achievements
A primary part of the Rolls Royce company became the development of the gas turbine engine. The engine designs that they developed became responsible for enabling airlines to cut journey times on long haul flights. A Rolls Royce engine powered the first transatlantic flight and the first flight from England to Australia.
Rolls-Royce today produces engines for all of the world's top airlines. The marine aspect of the group focuses on power, propulsion and motion control solutions. The group has equipment on 20,000 commercial and naval vessels around the world.
The company is a leading force in the world's energy markets. Rolls-Royce has supplied energy to customers in 120 countries and is constantly investing in new products for the oil and gas industry.
The defence aerospace market is also dominated by Rolls-Royce. Their engines power all of the major military aviation market sectors and they have become the number one military aero engine manufacturer in Europe and number two manufacturer in the world. 25% of the worlds military transport aircraft, helicopters, trainers and combat aircraft are powered by Rolls-Royce.
