SABMiller PLC

SABMiller is one of the largest brewers in the world. The company began its operation in South Africa as the name indicates - South African Breweries. It was founded in 1895 in South Africa has expanded globally to become a market leader in the brewing industry. From its original South African base it has extended its operations into developing markets and emerging economies like China, India and Eastern Europe.

As one of the world's largest breweries, SABMiller has brewing interests and distribution agreements in over 60 countries across the world. It became to second largest brewer by volume in the world after SAB plc acquired 100% of the Miller brewing company which was the second largest brewery in the United States by volume. The company changed its name to SABMiller.

SABMillers' Global Brands

• Europe - SABMiller entered into the European markets in 1995 and has focused on the fast developing consumer markets in Eastern Europe. SABMiller has major brewing operations in Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, and Russia. They import their international premium brands into the UK, France and Germany. Some of the brands include Lech, Pilsner Urquell and Peroni.

• North America - SABMillers local subsidiary in America is the Miler Brewing Company. It is the second largest brewer in the US market and is the beer market with world's biggest profit pool. Miller also has licensed production in Canada and distributes in Mexico. The big brands include Miller Lite and Miller Genuine Draft.

• Latin America - SABMillers' brewing operations include Columbia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Panama and Peru in Latin America, and they have the biggest market share in these countries. They also bottle soft drinks for the Coca-Cola Company. Their brands in these countries include Aguila, Port Royal and Balboa.

• South Africa - South Africa is SABMillers most established market so far and sales their contributed to 33% of the groups earnings. A soft drinks division of SAB Ltd is South Africa's largest producer of products for The Coca-Cola Company. Brands include Castle Lager, Hansa Pilsener and Carling Black Label.

• Africa and Asia - SABMIllers' brewing and beverage operations covers 31 countries in this region and they also bottle soft drinks for The Coca-Cola Company in seven of their African markets. The brands include 2M, Castle Lager, Fosters, Snow and Zorok.

These five divisions cover a broad spread of markets and no division accounts for more than a third of their operating profit. This has been due to the groups' large acquisitions such as the Bavaria Group in South America and the Miller Brewing Company in the USA and now SABMiller has a presence in over 60 countries.
