The group is an international utility services and environmental solutions company that owns the worlds fourth largest privately owned water company.

Severn Trent Water

The group's largest operation in the UK is the Severn Trent Water company. It is one of the UK's leading water sewerage companies. It was formed in 1974 as a result of new legislation and the introduction of the Water Act of 1973.

The company started off as a regional state owned water authority responsible for water management and supply around Birmingham. The company took its name from the two rivers the catchment area served - the Severn and the Trent.

Prior to 1973, 29 river authorities covered England and Wales with almost 1,300 sewage treatment authorities. This resulted in a lack of investment and with all the different suppliers for water and sewage treatments there was no national standard throughout the industry.

Severn Trent became one of ten privatised water companies in the UK and supplies the Midlands and some regions of Wales.

Severn Trent Laboratories

Severn Trent Laboratories provide solutions in water, land and waste analysis. They provide scientific services in chemistry, microbiology and ecotoxicology. Their analytical services include research on potable water, ground and wastewater, contaminated land, asbestos and radiochemistry.

A principle part of the business includes sampling and monitoring services for laboratory analysis on landfill sites, contaminated land and urban wastewater. They also have a wide range of monitoring and sample equipment for hire including:

• Dust and vapour monitoring
• Noise and vibration monitoring
